# Rate limits

> How many requests you can make.

| Mode | Per API key | Per organization |
| - | - | - |
| Test | 25 requests per second | 50 requests per second |
| Live | 100 requests per second | 200 requests per second |

Every response tells you where you stand:

| Header | Meaning |
| - | - |
| `X-RateLimit-Limit` | Requests allowed per second for this key. |
| `X-RateLimit-Remaining` | Requests left in the current second. |
| `X-RateLimit-Reset` | When the window resets (Unix seconds). |

Over the limit you get `429 rate_limited` with `Retry-After`. Wait that many seconds and retry.

Live name checks have their own, lower limit because they search CAC's registry; their `429`
carries a longer `Retry-After`.
